Learn moreHavířov is a town in the Moravian-Silesian Region in the Czech Republic, located about 11 km southeast of Ostrava, the capital of the region.
The main reason for the creation of this youngest town in the Czech Republic was the need to provide housing for mine and smelter workers during the period of industrial development in the Ostrava region after World War II. Architecturally, the most valuable and interesting element is the core of the town, and its immediate surroundings, which were built in the 1950s-1960s in the style of socialist realism.
Havířov has the highest population density per km2 in the country. This uniqueness is due to the historical concept of a settlement and satellite town.
The conception of the city’s creation already at that time envisaged that most of the economically active people would commute to neighbouring towns, mainly to Ostrava, Karvina and Orlová. Even today, Havířov is more focused on services, light manufacturing and smaller manufacturing enterprises. The largest employers include the Havířov Hospital (1,000 people); SEMAG, a producer of bakery, confectionery and delicatessen products (240 people); and VINAMET CZ, a leading manufacturer of medical and packaging equipment (90 people).
The most important road passing through the town is the first class road No. 11 from Ostrava to Český Těšín. Along it stretches the main housing estate of the town with high-rise buildings. Other roads connect the town with Orlova and Karvina.
Outside the town, the Těšínská Pahorkatina hills and two nearby water reservoirs (Žermanická and Těrlická) are popular recreational destinations.
